Season May Be Over for Manatees Smith: The doctors have spoken and Derrek Smith of the Matlacha Manatees didn't like what he heard. The 22-year-old reliever is almost certainly gone for the rest of the year and depending on his progress could miss some of next season as well. Smith sustained his season-ending injury during the Yucca Valley Yellows game yesterday at Ballpark of Yucca Valley. He had to leave the game because he hurt himself while throwing a pitch. Today the Matlacha medical staff reported Smith had a torn labrum and would be absent from the lineup for at least 4-5 months.

Smith has compiled an ERA of 6.00 so far this season, winning 0 games with 1 loss and no saves. In 9 relief appearances he has hurled 15 innings, yielded 9 hits and struck out 18. Opposing hitters have batted .173 against Smith.
