ABL's Top Rookie Honored: For several weeks the rumor mill had it that the 1961 Rookie of the Year Award winner was a foregone conclusion and the trophy would go to Detroit first baseman, Jesus Cardenas. It is no longer a rumor -- the American Baseball League made it official today.

Cardenas won the award by hitting .294 and collecting 144 hits, 22 home runs, 70 RBIs and 32 walks. He scored 93 runs and posted a .340 on-base percentage.

Danny Phillips of the Detroit Wolverines finished second in voting, while Earl Drake of the San Francisco Seagulls finished third.
